The term classical music of the East is attributed to classical musical traditions of the wider region of Eastern Mediterranean, which is inextricably connected to our national modal system of Byzantine music.
Its current form (classical oriental music) is a blend of the musical contributions of various nationalities (Greeks, Turks, Armenians, Jews), which were mainly formed and evolved during the Ottoman Empire.
The purpose of the festival is the presentation of a part of this really rich musical tradition through several concerts and the practical understanding of the musicological concepts of this musical system through a series of seminars, lectures and workshops.
The festival will have the honour to host great virtuosos, university professors, such as Socrates Sinopoulos (classical kemenche and lute), Markos Skoulios (ney) Eugenios Voulgaris (bowed tambour and classical kemenche), Kyriakos Tapakis (oud and lute), Katerina Papadopoulou (song), Sergios Voulgaris (percussion), Turkish teachers and virtuosos.
