The Progressive Union of Xanthi (FEX) was founded in 1952 and has played a very important role as a development factor of the quality of life in the wider region.
Up to now FEX deals with a great amount of cultural deposits in the range of traditional and contemporary creation and intriguing fields, such as art and education.
It operates in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, where the population is composed of many different religious, social and ethnic groups affecting the region’s daily life since the last century.
As a results of its operations comes the creation of the Municipal Library of Xanthi and Abdera, the collection of folklore material and the establishment of the Folk Museum of Xanthi, the Film Club, the Cultural Radio, the function of cultural and educational workshops, the participation in the "Free University" institution and the organisation of institutions in the region.
FEX’s work initiated the creation of basic infrastructure and established it as the most important non-governmental - non-profit organisation.
Today, our region is of particular interest in almost all fields. The application of the new strategy’s basic idea is the “cultural deposit”. It was designed as the central administrative unit of several pilot, experimental subprojects in order to acquire knowledge and experience and use them for the region’s development.
It aims at using the existing infrastructure combined with a constantly readjusted philosophy that captures the public's trust (complex social groups in regions with special characteristics), supplies growth models and educates human potential for their use.
Based on this programme structure, FEX organises all its actions in classes which function as development and management tools of the cultural goods in our region contributing to its better evaluation and utilisation.
